Recent Projects related to “BEYKOZ DOGA COLLEGE FOREST”

Recently, some camels, ostriches were brought to provide students and people seeing unique species in Beykoz Doga College Forest. Many new tree species were planted. Some huts and animal houses were built. The stream in the middle of the forest was cleaned by the students and the teachers.
The next project of BEYKOZ DOGA COLLEGE FOREST will be held about enlarging the forest and planting more trees and feeding the animals.

It is not known exactly, when this Portuguese forest was created. Several Portuguese kings are mentioned in its origin – Sancho I, Sancho II, Afonso III and Dinis.

On a less known version, Queen Isabel, to whom her husband D. Dinis had given this lands, is presented as the main responsible for its soaring, as soon as she knew of a special pine specie that could easily grow on sandy soil.

However, it is to King Dinis, the Farmer (1261-1325) that is given the responsibility of this area’s sowing, development and arrangement. Therefore, this enormous area of forest is still known as the King’s Pine Forest.

Someone named it as the “Greatest Portuguese Monument” due to its important role in local and national development, across the years.

Since the beginning this pine forest had the important function to hold sand and salt that invaded fertile lands on interior, allowing, this way, farming. In the first early centuries of nationality the forest offered wood for ship building that would be used for development of fishing, for maritime trade and later on maritime expansion. During the Philippine period (1580-1640) the forest’s limits were defined.

In the eighteen century new regulations were created in order to increase the development, effective good use and defense of Leiria’s wood. As consequence raw materials were supplied to the famous glass factory of Marinha Grande (near city), founded by William Stephens.

On the nineteen century, the forest strongly decayed due, either, to the French Invasions and big fires in 1806, 1814, 1818, 1824.

In 1867 a study of Bernardino Barros Gomes divided the forest into rectangles in order to achieve a better management of it.

In 1980 another study allowed to calculate the total area of the Forest – more than 11000 hectares.

CONSIDERATION ON THE UPPER FOREST LIMIT IN THE „MUNŢII RODNEI” NATIONAL PARK

In the Rodnei Mountains, human intervention, propelled by the wish to expand the grazing and exploitation area for limiting forests, is reflected at present in the upper limit intensely lowered in comparison with the natural limit, especially in the most accessible areas. The variation in altitude of the superior limit of forests is appreciated at a medium range of 200-300 m, having elevated values on the southern slope where, on several peaks, the superior limit of forests is artificially lowered up to 1,100-1,200 m in altitude.

The forest species that can be found most often at the upper limit of the forest is the Picea Abies. There are situations when the superior limit of the forest is made up of other species as well: the Fagus sylvatica (in the south and south-west), the Sorbus aucuparia, the Betula pendula, and the Pinus cembra (in the east). In most cases, however, the height of limiting trees in Rodnei Mountains exceeds 8-10 m, which gives away the fact that, generally speaking, the present forest is not one to indicate a natural limit.

The forests’ upper limit is, mostly, artificially lowered due to the anthropic pressure in the transition area between the forest belt and the sub-alpine belt. Here, deforestation activities aiming at the expansion of grazing fields and obtaining wood, conducted mainly throughout the past century, have had a main effect in the destruction of savins and spruce open woods, and in the deforestation of large areas covered in forests. Since spruce forests make up the upper-most belt in Rodnei Mountains, and softwood timber is the main matter destined for the internal and external market, or used in the reinforcing of mining galleries, it is easy to understandthe downwards expansion of terrains occupied by sub-alpine and alpine grazing fields following deforestation.

The natural limit is usually found where the terrain is not easily accessible, especially on the northern slope of Rodnei Mountains, on the slopes of Hotarului Peak, Curmătura Pietrosului, Piciorul Plescuţei Peak, Gaja Mountain.

ECOLOGICAL ISSUES OF DOGA COLLEGE FOREST

Environmental and economic benefits, systematic application of sustainable waste management in education buildings also make a positive contribution to the education of future generations. This study examines schools in Istanbul, which are part of the Eco-Schools International Programme. And DOGA COLLEGE is one of the strong members of this programme. This programme was established in 1994 with European Union support and it aims to introduce environmental management systems into primary schools within the scope of ISO 14001/EMAS. A questionnaire study was administered on the theme of litter management and sustainable waste management within elementary schools located in the Asian and European parts of Istanbul city, and the findings of a field survey were examined. Questionnaire findings were gathered under five themes: litter management, composting of organic waste, re-use of school materials, reducing consumption–selection of recycled products, waste management and sorting of recyclable materials.

Alow average of just over 1 sq metre of forest reserve is put aside per person; conservationists say the average in Europe is about 40 sq metres per person.
Air-pollution in the city is a big problem. Though clean-burning Russian natural gas has replaced dirty lignite as the preferred winter heating fuel, air pollution is stil significant, largely due to the ever-inreasing number of cars jamming city roads.

The major environmental threat to the city is pollution od its wasterways. Increased oil exports from Caspian Sea region to Russia and Georgian ports and across the Black Sea has led to increased oil-tanker traffic through the narrow and winding Turkish Straits, which comprise the Dardanelles, the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus.

KAMPINOS FOREST - historical and social information

Reach in wood Mazowsze Forest has been well known and valued for a long time. Pines were cut down and floated by Vistula river to Gdańsk.

Considering its proximity to Warsaw, the Kampinos Forest was an area of frequent military activities. There are mementoes of these times such as "Sosna Powstańców 1863 roku" (Pine of Insurgents of 1863) or a cemetery of Nazi execution victims in Palmiry.

Many inhabitants of Warsaw are buried at the Palmiry cemetery, they were secretly killed there by the Germans in the years 1939-1945.

Every year in Brochów there is a recreation of Battle of the Bzura, the biggest battle of the September 1939 Campaign, which was fought by Polish armies Poznań and Pomorze against German 8th and 10th Army of South Group.

Additional attractions near the Kampinos Forest:

- Żelazowa Wola, a manor house where famous composer Frédéric Chopin was born;

- Brochów, fortified church, place of Chopin’s baptism and wedding of his parents;

- Modlin Stronghold;
- Romanesque monastery in Czerwińsk by Vistula river;

73,000 people live within the boundaries of the biosphere reserve, mainly in villages. Agriculture and tourism are the main economic activities in the area.

The Kampinos Forest almost reaches Warsaw so it’s very popular destination for weekends breaks and holidays. A very important thing is that the Park produces a lot of clean, fresh air for the capital city.

Kampinos is popular among hikers and cyclists from the capital, who take advantage of its 300km of marked walking and cycling trails. The eastern part of the park, closer to the city, is more favoured by walkers as it’s accessible by public transport; the western part is less visited.

More than 360 kilometres of hiking trails were marked in Kampinos National Park. The main trail has a length of more than 50 kilometres. Bicycle tourism is difficult because of the sandy ground. Therefore, 140-kilometre Kampinos Bicycle Route is led on the outside part of the Park.

Sandy Kampinos routes ensure great conditions for cross-country running and nordic walking, and in winter for cross-country skiing.

One can also rent a horse and ride on trails whose total length is around 360 kilometers.

HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL INFORMATION ABOUT “BEYKOZ DOGA COLLEGE FOREST”

Beykoz Doga College Forest of the Bosphorus has always been a location to spark the imagination, and in ancient times was a place of sacrifice. Blood was spilt to petition Zeus and Poseidon for a safe journey across the treacherous Black Sea, without which no one would venture into those stormy waters.

The first historic people to settle the upper-Bosphorus were Thracians and Greeks and the ancient name for the area was Amikos or Amnicus, named after a Thracian king. However, the area has changed hands many times since. As well as being one of the most strategically important crossing points in history, the Bosphorus itself has always been rich in fish and opportunities for plundering the even richer communities around the Marmara, and Beykoz has been settled by wave on wave of invaders from around and beyond the Black Sea: Thracians, Bithynians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and finally Turks.

In the Ottoman period, the land behind Beykoz was open country and forest used for hunting and an escape from the city by the Sultans and their court. The hunting lodge at Küçüksu, and the fountains and mosques that decorate the villages along the coast date from this era. The name Beykoz was established at this time and appears to derives from Bey (meaning prince, lord or gentleman) and Koz (the Persian word for village). (Koz is also a word for a type of walnut, another possible etymology).

Under Turkish control the straits have retained their strategic value; indeed British troops assembled in Beykoz on their way to fight in the Crimea in 1854.

Later attempts were made to bring industry to the area, most importantly the glassworks at Paşabahçe, which began as small workshops in the 17th century and by the 18th and 19th centuries were a well-established factory making the ornate spiral-designed or semi-opaque white glassware known to collectors worldwide as 'Beykoz-ware'. A well-known shoe factory was later built, now both glass and shoe factories are closed.

On the hillsides above the Bosphorus Beykoz has always suffered from uncontrolled development and large areas above the Bosphorus are covered in illegal housing, where migrants have come to live and work in the glass and other industries. Areas like Çubuklu and Paşabahçe are continually struggling to put in infrastructure to keep up with the housing being built illegally or semi-legally. Due to this incoming industrial workforce Beykoz has had a working-class character unseen behind the luxury of the Bosphorus waterfront. Schooling is somewhat of a problem and it is common to see children from the Beykoz area going to school by boat to the European side.

Now the illegal building is happening in the forests further back from the sea, particularly in the areas of Çavuşbaşı and Elmalı. This countryside is scattered with little villages, all of which are expanding now more roads are being put through.

Not all the new housing is scrappy, and Beykoz holds some of the most luxurious new development in the Istanbul area, the villa estates of Acarkent and Beykoz Konaklar, home to filmstars, members of parliament and other Istanbul glitterati. How attractive these places are and how cultured and respectable the residents are matters of some debate. The Bosphorus has historically been teeming with fish, and Beykoz does have a small fishing community (although the main fishing fleet is based in Istanbul itself). The fish restaurants at Anadolu Kavağı in particular have sprung up to serve day trippers from the Bosphorus tours by ferryboat.

Our expedition in Rodna Mountains National Park

Rodnei is the highest massif in the Eastern Carpathians (Pietrosu Rodnei Peak- 2.303 meters). Its main ridge (50 kilometers long, 3-40 km wide) offers you a splendid panorama of all the surrounding mountains. Volcanicmountain, it has some glacial lakes like Lala and some caves, the most notable one is "Izvorul Tausoarelor", the deepest cave in Romania, and the second in Europe, going about 479 meters beneath the surface and "Jgheabul lui Zalion", 242 meters deep. Some protected species of flora and fauna can be observed here: edelweiss, chamois, marmot, lynx etc

LEIRIA'S TREES

Leiria Pine Forests belongs to a large National Forest which was created to form a sea wind protective barrier, a long time ago.

Thus, beyond the wooded area where the predominant pine is Pinus pinaster, we have a long coastline where several marine plants, such as beach’s Murganheira and sea thistle, can be found. Regarding the animal kingdom only insects and small reptiles. In the area of the first row of dunes we can also observe migratory birds that find there rest and shelter or their nesting site (such as the little Sea-Swallow).

When we move into the pine forest, the soil is more stable and the salinity is lower, which means there is the enriching of both flora and fauna.

Beyond the Pinus pinaster that prevails due to intensive planting along the years, there are some clusters of Pinus pinea. In the surroundings of Moel’s brook (watercourse that crosses the forest from east to west and flows into the Atlantic Ocean) it is possible to find acacia (Acacia horrida), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), poplars (Populus) alders (Alnus glutinosa), oaks (Quercus rubra) and willows (Salix babylonica). Some of these trees, such as the Eucalyptus globulus and the serpent pine trees, are considered of National Interest due to their size and configuration.

Beyond the trees we can find different types of undergrowth vegetation – white and pink heather, shrub ferns, lentisk, furze, broom and crowberry.

Rabbits and hares mostly compose the forests’ fauna, but we can also find otters, hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, etc. Regarding to birds we have crows, jays, leaf warbler, blackbirds, doves, pigeons, thrushes and partridges.

Rodna Mountains - The National park

The Mounts of Rodna preserve, more than all the other mountains of Romania, the traces of the quaternary glaciers.A karstic relief represented by caves like: “Izvorul Tausoarelor” (the Source of Tausoare) or “the gutter of Zalion” (Jgheabul him Zalion) or “the bath of Schneider” (Baia him Schneider).The river of Somes Mare has its source in this solid mass and collects all the small rivers of the western south, the south and the west of the Rodnei Mounts: Cobasel, Valea Vinului, Anies, Cormaia, Rebra, Salauta, with Telcisor, Stramba.

Under the top of Gargalau, it is the river Bistrita Aurie (Bistrita Dorée) which takes its source and moves towards the area of Bucovine.There are also 23 glacial lakes among which: Iezerul Pietrosului, Taurile Buhaiescului, Lala Pond, Lala Mica.

The flora is extremely rich, there are several rare species protected by the law: edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum), yellow gentian (Gentiana lutea), (Gentiana punctata), angelica (Angelica archagelica), Sangele voinicului (Nigitella will rubra), the yew (Taxus will rubra).
A fauna protected at the international level more than 29 (species of the lépidoptères among which Erebia pharte carpatica.

The cock of heather (Tetrao urogallus), the imperial eagle (Aquila chrysqetos);Among the mammals: the stag carpatic (Cerfus elaphus), the roe-deer (Capreolus capreolus), the marmot (Marmota marmota), the wild boar (Known scrofa), the bear (Ursus arctos), the wolf (Canis lupus), the lynx (Lynx lynx). This biosphere reserve is characterized by a high diversity of lowland habitats

with dune belts separated by swamp areas and a mixture of forest types.

The Kampinos Forest includes Europe’s largest area of inland sand dunes, mostly tree-covered and up to 30m high. It’s a strange feeling to have sand between your toes so far from the sea. In the depressions between the dunes there are peat bogs, meadows, and marshes covered with a growth of alder. They shelter much of its animal life. The park's flora abounds in rare protected species. Its wildlife includes such animals as elk, beaver, and lynx.

The Kampinos Forest is inhabited by about 250 elks, a few hundred boars, 200 species of birds, 100 beavers and 10-15 lynxes. Recently the Kampinos National Park has seen the return of the red deer and the white-tailed eagle, and the population of storks and cranes has grown too.

Elks, beavers and lynxes live in the park but are hard to spot; you are more likely to see other animals such as hares, foxes, deer and, occasionally, wild boars. The park is home to some bird life, including black storks, cranes, herons and marsh harriers.

The Kampinos Forest is a mixture of forest types (bog-alder forest, ash-alder flood plain forest, pine-oak mixed forest and low oak-lime-hornbeam forest).

Major ecosystem type:

Temperate broadleaf forests or woodlands

Its flora is rich with around 1245 species of plants, of which 69 are protected. A plant curiosity is a small shrub – Leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata) – a relic of ice age.

Last day our teacher brought us a text of the animals and plants of the "Fragas do Eume". Mercedes told us that we had got five minutes to read the text and to memorize all the things we could about the text because we would play a game.
In the memory game we needed to memorize tha description of ten animals and then match the names with definitions. After that we read the text with the animals descriptions. The text describes the fragility of the ecosistems in the Fragas. There are a lot of animals in danger like the Geomalus maculosus, the dormouse and peregrine falcon. This text is to make people aware about that especial enviroments which are disappearing.

Beykoz Doga Campus is situated on fifty hectares of Ahmet Mithat Efendi’s farm, which has been in use for 150 years in the north-west of Turkey, in İstanbul. Doga transformed this beautiful environment into a valley of education. The Doga educational system is based on a concept of natural education, and the Beykoz Doga Campus offers ample opportunities for students to discover and develop their abilities in a natural atmosphere. From it’s horse-riding facilities to it’s zoo, and from trekking courses to camping grounds, the natural environment of Beykoz Campus provides students from both the Beykoz Campus and other Doga Campuses with the opportunity to experience nature-based education.

Studying the Maltese Forest

Studying the Maltese Forest.

Since the only forest in Malta is Buskett, we studied an area from this forest. Here we are describing our work. An area of around 50m by 50m was chosen. The criteria of selection were:
 to chose an area that is not cultivated by man and that grows wild
 that is safe to study i.e. no one can fall from high levels, there are no wells, no one can get lost
 where there is species richness and not bare land.
The students were grouped in 3s or 4s and every group had to study 10m by 10m.
Quadrat method was used to sample and study the area. The following instructions were given to the students.
Calculating the species diversity using quadrats.

Aim: To analyse the species diversity in a particular area at Buskett.
Apparatus: quadrat, foreceps, writing material, measuring tape, string.
Method:
1. Find a suitable area at Buskett where the analysis could be carried out.
2. Measure the area.
3. Mark the area to be studied by placing a string at the perimeter.
4. Draw a map of the area to be studied.
5. Throw the quadrat over the shoulder without looking at where the quadrat will fall. Make sure that it doesn’t fall out of the marked area. If it does, pick it up and throw it again.
6. Move closer to the quadrat and analyse all the living organisms that you see inside. Take note of any vegetation, snails, insects, worms, etc.
7. Repeat steps 4 and 6 10 times. Try to cover all the area.
8. Analyse the results.

Results: draw a map of the area and indicate in which part was each quadrat thrown.

Leiria’s Pinewood occupies about 11000ha of land.

It is located on the southern limit of a long littoral area of dunes covered with pine trees.

It starts close to the mouth of river Liz and lengthens along littoral coast to south.

It’s geographical co-ordinates are 39º 42’45’’N and 39º 53´N of latitude and 8º03’30’’W e 9º03’’W of longitude. The climate is Mediterranean and wet.

This space - of something more than 9000 hectares -, comprises of the river basin of the Eume river, being able to define the great majority of its land like of average mountain, and characterizing its landscape by a strong intervention of the man.

Forests in Dragoiesti area, Suceava

Most of the forests surrounding Dragoiesti village, located in the Suceava County, are mixed resinuous and deciduous forests. However, the spruce fir cover important areas. Some of the most frequent wood species are: Picea abies (spruce fir), Abies alba (fir tree), Fagus silvatica (beech), Acer pseudoplatanus (sycamore maple), Betula verrucosa (bitch). There are also: Pinus silvestris (pine), Larix decidua (larch tree), Ulmus Montana (elm), Salix caprea (goat willow), Alnus viridis (green alter).

Man's interference in the natural landscape was quite rational in time and it hasn't totally changed the natural balance. Today, this balance is in danger of being changed because of the improper forest operation. That is why we need severe ecological measures to protect the forests. The existing clearings, hayfields or grazing fields for cattle have a diverse flora with numerous plants that are usually used in alternative medicine such as: Arnica Montana (Arnica), Achillea millefolium (milfoil), Origanum vulgaris (common marjoram), Pulmonaria officinalis (lungwort), Veronica officinalis (speedwell), Lycopodium clavatum (wolf's claw), etc.

During the vegetation season, there are numerous species of esculent mushrooms, soem of them very popular: edible boletus, yellow agaric, orange agaric, honey agaric.

Beech forests shield over 100 bird species including the green woodpecker, ring dove, grey owl and jay.

Protected areas –Bistrita Rodna Mountains

With a surface of 47,000 ha, Rodna Mountains National Park includes the highest peaks of Eastern Carpathians (Pietrosu Mare Peak, 2303 m) and one of the oldest natural reservations in our country (Pietrosu Mare, 1932), known as Biosphere Reservation. The importance of this National Park is due both to the geology of the massif and to the diversity of flora and fauna species, some of them very rare and others found only on this massif.

The forest ecosystems have a very high dendrochronological potential, the building of dendrochronological series for the main forest, by ecological areas, being a premise of a better knowledge on the dynamics of environment factors and implicitly of the complex biological system, the forests. Tree growing in an area with seasonal variations of climate (winter-summer alternation or the humid season-dry season) is characterized by a single growth per vegetation period, namely the growth ring. The growth ring varies from one year to another (in the case of annual variation of the climate ) or from one vegetation period (season) to another ( in the case when the seasonal variation of climate is longer or shorter than a year, as far as both its width and its structure and density of wood are concerned. The annual tree ring constituted an archive a real database, regarding the secular and multi-secular variation of the environment factors at both global and mezzo-and micro scale levels .

The forests of Romania cover more than 25% of the country surface.The conifer forests are scattered with birches and and maples in low area.Transylvanian plateau is covered with forests of oaks and beech trees.Large forests of oaks could also found in Dobrogea,in west plain and north side of Romanian plain.Here appear lots of deers,foxes,bears,squirrels,falcons and owls.

Forests, which in ancient times and in middle age cover almost whole surface of Romania(except south-west),gave way gradually for agricultural lands.In these days the forests occupy 26.2% (6.366.000 ha) from the country surface,consisting in beech forests (about 2 millions ha),oaks(1.1 milions ha),conifers forests (1.9 milions ha).

There are also other species of forests like hornbeam,poplar,lime.Alpine passes cover extended areas at altitudes who are beyond 1.800 m and are used for growing sheep. Beyond 400.000 ha(6.3% from total surface) are clearly affected (became arid) by pollution with sulfur compounds or with else compounds from industrial emissions.

The Carpathian Mountains are a mountain chain, belonging to the great mountain central system of Europe. The Carpathian Mountains are situated between Vienna Basin (which separates it from alpine chain) and lane of Timok (which separates it from Satara Planina, in Balcanic Peninsula) from an arc with a length of 1500 km and a maximum width of 130 km, unfolding on 6° latitude and about 10° longitude. The Carpathian Mountains lye on the territory of seven countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia. The Carpathian Mountains are middle mountains, only few sectors exceeding 2000 m altitude.

The discoveries made from the archaeological researches in the area Ferigile, next to Horezu revealed archaeological testimonials from centuries IX an XIII considering the location of humans settlements. The development of Horezu settlements is related to transhumance routes,from the roads of outlaws, which crossed the area.
The village, today the city of Horezu is attested in the hristory belonging to the ruler Vlad Calugarul from year 1478, which commemorated the village Horezu.

Buskett - Malta

Buskett, in Rabat, Malta is the only woodland area in Malta and is overlooked by Verdala Palace.

The Buskett Gardens are located in the fertile valley of Wied Il- Luq. They are located to the south of Rabat and just east of Dingli. The gardens are at their best in the spring but they offer shade from the harsh mid-summer sun and offer a quiet place for a walk in the winter months. Verdala Palace, an official residence of the President of Malta, is located on the edge of the Gardens.

Many different trees and shrubs grow in the gardens but there are also many fruit-bearing trees there as well. This is one of the greenest areas in Malta. Indigenous forests once covered Malta, but trees were cut down for shipbuilding in the era when galleons plied the Mediterranean waters and for agricultural purposes. Perhaps the Buskett Gardens offer a glimpse of what Malta looked like in those days.
The gardens are very popular with Maltese people. People often visit the gardens to go for walks in the peaceful settings of the garden and to enjoy a picnic in the shade of the trees, or to work in woodland area. The gardens are also the site of the popular feast of Imnarja (the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul) which is celebrated on June 29. Hundreds of people flock to the gardens the night before the 29th to eat the traditional Maltese dish of Rabbit Stew cooked in wine and to listen to traditional folk music and singing and then in the morning there is the annual agricultural show.

Buskett Garden is Malta's only large area of woodland. It was planted by the Knights Hospitaller as a hunting ground. It lies next to Verdala Palace, in a valley, just inland from Dingli Cliffs. Buskett has vineyards, oranges, olive and lemon groves, and is heavily wooded with native, hardy species such as Mediterranean pines. You can stick to the pathways lined with ivy-clad stone walls or venture off into the woodland. From autumn to spring you are bound to find plenty of interest, from wild flowers, natural springs, and woodland creatures. The wood leads up hill to the more formal gardens of Verdala Palace.

Verdala
Panoplies of foliage spread their shade over the valley floor, providing a welcome respite against the heat of summer. There are orange and cypress trees, irregular cactuses, leguminous carobs, aromatic firs and the Judas tree, which foretells Easter with its pink blossom.
The Verdala Palace is perched on a hilltop overlooking Buskett Garden. It was built by Grand Master Hughes de Verdalle in 1588 as a summer residence. Following restoration, this elegant building now serves as the President's summer residence. The palace is not open to the public, but it does offer a notable landmark visible clearly from Dingli Cliffs, towering as it does over Buskett woodland.

Kampinos Forest

is a large forest complex located to the west of Warsaw in Poland. It covers a large part of the ancient valley of Vistula river. Once a gigantic forest covering 670 km² of central Poland, now it covers roughly 240 km².

Most of the Kampinos Forest is the Kampinos National Park. Among the distinctive features of the area is a combination of sandy dunes and marshes, with dense pine and spruce forest. In January 2000 the area was added to UNESCO's List of Biosphere Reserves.

The city of Suceava is in the Suceava County seat in Bukovina,

Moldavia

region, in north-eastern Romania. The city was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1388 to 1565.Dimitrie Cantemir in his famous work Descriptio Moldavie gives the origin of the name as Hungarian: Szűcsvár, meaning city of furriers. For nearly 200 years the city of Suceava was the capital of the Moldavian state and main residence of the Moldavian princes (between 1388 and 1565). The city was the capital of the lands of Stephen the Great, one of the pivotal figures in Romanian history, who died in Suceava in 1504. He built a church every time he defeated an enemy army. During the rule of Alexandru Lăpuşneanu, the seat was moved to Iaşi in 1565. Michael the Brave captured the city in 1600 during the Moldavian Magnate Wars in attempt to unite Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, but he was defeated the same year and Suceava failed to become the capital again. Together with the rest of Bukovina, Suceava was under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy (later Austria-Hungary) from 1775 to 1918; the border of Habsburg domains passed just south-east of the city. At the end of World War I, it became part of Greater Romania. During the communist period in Romania, Suceava was heavily industrialized. In the past few years Suceava started to evolve more rapidly. The most important sights in the town date from the time as a princely capital: Mirǎuti Church - founded in 1390 by Petru I of Moldavia, it is the oldest church in Suceava. Stephen the Great was crowned in this church in 1457 and the church remained the coronation church of Moldavia until 1522; Church of Saint George, part of the Monastery of Saint John the New - founded by Bogdan the One-eyed in 1514. It has frescoes painted on the outside, typical of the region, and is one of the seven churches listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Dragoiesti school, Suceava

Drăgoieşti is a commune located in Suceava County, Romania. It is composed of three villages: Drăgoieşti, Lucăceşti and Măzănăeşti. The school in Drăgoieşti was built in 1871, with the lessons being taught in German, a general rule at that time in Bucovina. The only schools where the lessons were taught in Romanian in the proximity of Drăgoieşti were those from Ciprian Porumbescu and Ilişeşti, even if in Ilişeşti there was another school where the lessons were taught in German. At the beginning, the school in Drăgoieşti functioned in private houses, first being organized in one classroom, then later in three classrooms, where the children of the local people were gathered. This situation is encountered until somewhere at the beginning of the 20th century, more exactly in 1909, when the old building of the Drăgoieşti school is built, with seven rooms, which make up the classrooms, the teachers’ room and the annexes rooms. Towards the beginning of the World War II and during it, the Drăgoieşti School had much to suffer. The local population was evicted, the school staff was taken on the front, which makes it impossible for the educational process to take place for a long period of time. After the World War II, the reorganisation of the countryside institutions began, amongst which was also the school. The number of students from the village rose. In 1947, the lessons were taught at Drăgoieşti in several classrooms and it had nine subjects. A new situation appeared in the school year 1948-1949, at the moment when a new reform took place. In 1955 the new building of the village school was built, as a result of the growth in number of students, the new building having several classrooms , absolutely necessary for the educational process. Some of the most respectable and cherished teachers who shared to the students of Drăgoieşti the secrets of the world of knowledge were Sofronie Brădăţan and Alexandra Brădăţan ( in 1914), the teacher Făgăraş and Veninschi with his wife ( in 1925) and Emil Movileanu (in 1950) was the headmaster of the Drăgoieşti school for twenty five years. Nowadays, most of the teachers working at this school are not from Drăgoieşti.

Our school history... The school was opened on 12 Sept 2002 and consists of one main building with two floors. Both floors have eight classrooms, a computer classroom and a science laboratory. We also have a library. Currently, there are 17 people on staff. 15 teachers and two adminıstrative personnel.

We are located in the seaside town of Dikili, İzmir. In this region there is much plant diversity. We have just as much plant diversity here in Turkey as there is throughout most of Europe, but we also have quıte a few endemic species of our own. Our school garden has a total of 120 trees. 95 of which, are olive trees.

Our student enrollment is as follows:
10 students in the 4-5 year age group.
120 students in the 6-11 year age group.
132 students in the 12-15 year age group.

This is our schoolyard and in the middle our newly planted tree!...

Our school in Megalopoli, was founded in 1926, but an earthquake in 1965 destroyed it, so the building you see in the photos was made in the early 70's. It now has 13 classrooms, with 317 pupils from 12 to 15 years of age. Megalopoli, is an industrial city, which was founded because of the presence of lignite in the subsoil of the area. Four electrical power units contribute to Greece's power supply. Among other important things, is the ancient Theater which according to archaeologists, was the biggest in Greece, with a capacity of 17.000-21.000 people. The town of Megalopoli is surrounded by forests with the biggest being Mountain Mainalo, our topic for our project.

Our school was founded in June 1989 on the initiative of the parents living in Ursynów district and it was one of the very first such schools in Poland. The development of our school shows how much it is needed here. We still rent the buildings but at the very beginning, we only had one classroom for 16 students. At the moment there are 20 classes with 310 students: 13 classes at our primary school and 7 at our 3-year secondary school.

The school is run by Samodzielne Koło Terenowe Nr 21 Społecznego Towarzystwa Oświatowego - STO (the Local Board of the Civic Educational Association number 21) and is one of the biggest.

The members of the Association are: the parents of our present and former students, our teachers and our former students. The Civic Educational Association is an all-Poland association, for all those who are concerned about the condition of the Polish educational system and those who are interested in creating new, alternative, educational forms. The STO schools educate in a creative way, encourage the students to broaden their minds and develop their personalities.

Our school is named after Jan Nowak Jeziorański (1913 - 2004). He was a great Polish patriot living abroad, one of the founders of Radio Free Europe. He spoke on behalf of the Poles and other nations submitted to the Soviet Union who could not freely express their own opinions.

Hello,

We attend the school “Marija Regina” at Blata l-Bajda. Our school forms part of “St Ignatius College”. In our school there are about 800 girls and about 120 teachers. Our headmaster is Mr Victor Agius and we have 4 assistant heads Mr Diacono, Mr Schembri, Ms Saliba and Ms Formosa. All the students here are in one of 5 different age groups. There are 7 classes form 1 and the students are 11 years of age. There are 6 classes form 2 and the students are 12 years of age. There are 7 form 3 classes and the students are 13 years. There are 8 form 4 classes and the students are 14 years and there are 7 form 5 classes and the students are 15 years. After this year the students proceed to other schools. We are form 2 and form 3 students. At form 2 we learn the following subjects: Maths, English, Maltese, Science, Social Studies, History, Geography, Religion, ALM (arts, literature and music), Italian and Physical Education. We are sending you a short video clip that we filmed ourselves to show you our school. We are looking forward to start this eTwinning project with you. We enjoy doing science experiments and we look forward to shart this experience of commenting about different experiments. We hope that you like our experiments and that we like yours, and we learn from each other.

In 9th September 1968 was created the Preparatory School of Leiria, that latter was renamed as José Saraiva’s Preparatory School.

In 1999, September again, the school changed to a new location where it still is now. It has three buildings for classrooms and two others for gymnastics and for meals. The school is located in a place called Cruz d’Areia (Leiria’s borders). In 22nd August 2000 the school changed name again, to José Saraiva’s Basic School of 2nd and 3rd grade. It belongs, now, to a larger group of schools.

Our patron is José Saraiva.
This renamed teacher was born on 1st April 1881, close to Fundão (Castelo Branco, Portugal).
He was a real self-made man!
Between 1915 and 1932 he lived in Leiria where he was High School teacher. Besides this he was Historian, Art critic and was involved on many projects related to education and culture.
